I may be one of the few students who has never changed my major since I started classes at Northwestern over two years ago. I began as a business administration/marketing major (meaning I am a business major with a concentration in marketing), and added a public relations major at the end of my freshman year. College is already stressful and life-changing, so it was a huge blessing to feel completely at peace with what I was studying.
It might sound simple, but during late high school I knew I wanted to do marketing because I was fascinated by beautifully packaged products and creative commercials, and spent too much time scrolling through Instagram feeds of my favorite brands. My advisor is a public relations professor, and once I realized I could do both a marketing and a PR major, I decided to at least give the whole communications thing a try. Turns out, it rivaled my passion for marketing!
Public relations has many facets – which means it offers many opportunities for various careers – but what I liked the most is the idea of helping a worthy organization succeed through excellent communications (marketing and otherwise). It is icing on the cake that much of what I’m learning in my marketing classes overlaps or complements what I’m learning in my PR classes.
I can’t thank my professors enough for the tools they have provided me with thus far. My advisor and PR prof, Professor Minnick, has not only provided me with everything I need for a career in communications, but has made handling two different majors completely feasible.
My business profs, Professor Druin and Professor Vonk, have given me so many tangible ways to excel as a businesswoman. Really all of my professors have encouraged me to stop by their office at any time, whether to chat about class material or just life in general. I’m also on the golf team, which means I often miss up to two days of class in a week during our fall and spring seasons. This has not been a problem at all – the professors love to support athletes and provide every tool needed to stay on top of lectures and tests.
Don’t worry if you’re unsure of what you want to major in or do with your career – your professors, advisors and spiritual leaders at Northwestern will help you discern where you will excel. Besides giving me a stellar education, the people here have made me think deeper than just marketing and communications. Northwestern has enriched my education greatly by allowing me to understand how I can use my degrees in marketing & PR to bring glory to God. I’m thankful that NWC gives each student the opportunity to pursue his or her passions, while learning how that can be used for the greater good!
